How My First Coaching Session Turned My Life Around

Jul 28, 2024

I wanted to share a personal story with you about a coaching lesson that truly turned my life around. When I was 12 years old, I vividly remember the feeling of moving through school from one grade to the next without truly understanding any of the subjects. Sure, I was passing, but deep down, I knew I didn’t grasp what I was studying. It was frustrating, and I was unhappy and sad, and I knew something had to change.

I finally mustered up the courage to ask my parents for help despite the shame I felt. My heart was beating fast, my voice was trembling. I couldn’t tell my parents I was struggling in all my subjects; instead, I opted for an easier approach. I focused on English, since it was my second language. I thought that might be easier to explain. My parents, always supportive, hired a tutor for me. Little did I know, he would turn out to be the perfect guide to whom I am indebted for the rest of my life.

He was supposed to teach me English, but in reality, he taught me how to study. This was a game-changer for me. He didn’t just focus on the language; he showed me how to approach learning in general. This wasn’t just about memorizing facts; it was about understanding concepts, organizing my thoughts, and building confidence. It felt like a miracle. There was a shift in my perspective.

It never occurred to me that I was lacking confidence. The confidence he instilled in me at that young age propelled me to succeed in all my other subjects. It was like a fog was blocking my vision. Once it was removed, I could see clearly. It wasn’t just about English anymore. I started to see improvements across the board. For the first time, I felt capable and intelligent, and I scored the highest in my primary school.

Looking back, I realize that English was my big thing. Once I knew how to master English, I was able to excel in all other areas. One subject triggered success in all other areas.

This experience is a common phenomenon many of us struggle with. We think we aren’t good enough in certain areas of our lives. But in reality, all we need is a little guidance to excel. And as the saying goes: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”
