My Path to America: Acting on the Big Thing!

Sep 12, 2024

As a young student, my dreams reached for the stars. I yearned to study in America, a country that was reserved for the top students. To make that dream a reality, I needed to score above 80% in my final 12th-grade exams to qualify for a government scholarship.

In Muscat, the capital of Oman , I lived in a dormitory next to my school. Life in the dormitory was a world of its own, with its own rules and expectations. To some dormmates, studying was for nerds, and I wasn’t considered one. I pretended not to care, but every morning, before the first light of dawn, I would sneak out of my room and find a quiet corner to study.

One day, I overslept and found myself racing against time. The door connecting the dorm to the school was locked, and the only way to make it to class was to jump the wall. Heart pounding, I scrambled over, only to land on the other side to find the school director waiting. He stood there, catching each student as they jumped, In his eyes, I was a troublemaker who didn’t belong in the ranks of the diligent.

The year sped by . Then came the day of the midterm awards ceremony, a small event to recognize the top students in our class. As I sat in the hall, my heart raced with a mix of excitement and anxiety. When the director began calling names . Suddenly, I heard a name that made my heart leap—my name. The director paused, a look of disbelief crossing his face.

"You!" he exclaimed, his voice tinged with surprise as he held out the certificate.

I looked up, meeting his gaze. "Yes, it’s me," I replied.

Maybe I was a rebel in his eyes, but I never lost sight of the bigger picture. My big thing at the time was to study in America, to chase a dream that seemed so distant yet so achingly close. And against all odds, I made it happen. I went to America to study, proving to myself and everyone else that you don’t have to be the smartest to achieve your dreams—you just need to give your best shot and focus on what you can control.

Acting on the big thing requires commitment and the courage to push through adversity. It’s about waking up early, sneaking out to study when everyone else is asleep, and jumping over walls when doors are closed. It’s about keeping the bigger picture in mind.

My story is a testament to the power of acting on your big thing. It’s a journey of resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of a dream. Whatever your big thing is, remember that the path may not be easy, but it is always worth it. Stay focused, and keep moving forward. Your big thing is within reach.
